1. Maine Towns War!

This new take on a classic game is a blast!

  1. Divide the deck evenly between each player

  2. In each round, every player will turn over the top card in their hand. The player whose card has the highest population wins the round, and takes all three cards!

  3. If any two played cards are from the same county, it’s a war! Each player turns over three more cards face down, and then one card face up. The player who wins this matchup takes all of the cards - both face-up and face-down. If there’s another war, repeat until someone wins the entire pile.

  4. If you run out of cards, you’re out of the game. The player who wins the entire deck wins!

2. Maine Population Blitz!

Learn the populations of Maine Towns with this super fun strategy game!

  1. Deal 5 cards to each player.

  2. Choose a guinea pig for the round. The guinea pig is required to sort their cards from highest to lowest population, and then lay them face down on the table: highest population on the left, and lowest on the right.

  3. The rest of the players lay their cards down below the guinea pig’s cards, creating a grid that has 5 columns and a row count equal to the number of players.

  4. Turn the cards over one column at a time. The player to have laid the card with the highest population in each column wins the column, and takes its cards.

  5. Continue to play until the entire deck has been used, switching the guinea pig each time. The player with the most cards at the end wins!

Strategy: unless you are the guinea pig, it is beneficial to evaluate how your cards compare to an average hand when determining where to place them. Oftentimes with average hands, it is strategic to sacrifice a low population card in the higher population columns, saving your better cards for lower population columns where you are more likely to win. As players get more experienced though, the strategy may again change as reverse psychology comes into play.

Variations: There can also be many variations on this game. You can alter the amount of cads dealt per round, or even deal all the cards at once and allow players to strategize in advance for the entire game, choosing which cards to play for each round. Experiment for yourself and find which version you think is the most fun!
